Future of XR-Driven Product Design: Ford Motor Company, BASF, Jacobs
Engineering Group and Flour Corporation Share Insights
Despite the relative slowdown in B2C uptake of extended reality (XR) (sales of consumer smartphone VR devices fell by more than 60% between 2017 and 2018), fields where outcomes are largely matching expectations are product design and visualization.
An increasing number of enterprises are currently using XR in product design and prototyping; responses from early adopters in VR Intelligence’s XR Industry Survey 2018 revealed that over 90% of business from a variety of industry verticals were using some form of XR in their design processes.
XR holds significant potential for product
designers; previously impractical use cases have been rendered viable thanks to
the benefits of intuitive visualization, the virtualization of testing along
with the implicit benefits to both efficiency and human safety. Product
manufacture also stands to benefit from increasing use of XR; one aerospace
manufacturer, utilizing AR glasses to guide technicians as they wire
aeroplanes, claims to have cut production time by 25% and achieved an almost 0%
Ultimately, however, there is still
uncertainty regarding the best uses and methods of XR in product design and
visualization. Only 50% of the respondents to VRX’s survey stated they were
utilizing augmented reality in their design processes, and many are unsure of
how best to fully integrate and leverage the technologies for the best ROI and
efficiency of design.
