Good day! Welcome to a new edition of The Monitor, WIRED’s pop culture news roundup. We’re still in a bit of a post-Comic-Con slump news-wise, but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening in the world of entertainment. Los Espookys to Get Paid to Haunt HBO for Second Season
Today in Good News For People Who Like Scary News, HBO announced this week that it’s renewing Los Espookys for a second season. No word yet on when the oddball comedy, led by Portlandia‘s Fred Armisen, will return, but it will no doubt be full of strange delights.
Jennifer Lawrence to Play a Mobster
Do you love Jennifer Lawrence enough to let her wack you? Welp, you might soon get the chance to find out. The actress is now attached to produce and star in an adaptation of Teresa Carpenter’s book Mob Girl, the true-life story of Arlyne Brickman, who grew up dating mobsters in New York City—and then eventually became one. (She also, as it turned out, became an informant on the Colombo crime family.) Paolo Sorrentino (The Young Pope) will direct the film.
A Sopranos Reboot Could Happen
Fans of The Sopranos have been holding out for a reboot for years. Now, there’s the smallest chance they might get their wish. The show’s creator, David Chase, is currently working on a prequel film called The Many Saints of Newark, which features the late James Gandolfini’s son Michael playing a young Tony Soprano. When asked if it’s possible the new film could be expanded into a TV series, HBO head of programming Casey Bloys told Deadline “I keep saying ‘never say never.’ There are no plans, there are no discussions about it, but (Michael) is a really good actor, we had him on The Deuce. There is nothing on the table at the moment by I will stay open.”
