The most powerful companies in tech have invested billions into the space of voice technology and are pushing into the homes of every American home. With companies like Amazon constantly slashing the prices of its Echo Dot and creating BOGO (Buy One Get One) sales, millions of Americans are adopt these voice technologies into their homes. The mass adoption of these devices have built the infrastructure necessary to start building on top of and changing the way we interact with voice forever.

Since Amazon had introduced its Alexa speaker into the market during 2014, smart speakers have grown dramatically each year after. It is now estimated that over 118 million homes have smart speakers. According to CB Insights, the voice recognition space is expected to reach $49B. Up until recently, Alexa has been strictly an at-home product. Now, Amazon is looking to expand to in-car services and recently rolled out Echo Auto which already has over 1 million pre-orders. It will provide a completely hands-free experience, allowing drivers to make calls, listen to podcasts, request driving directions, and even controlling other smart home devices.

“You want to keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, so using your voice makes more sense.” — Ned Curic, vice president of Amazon’s Alexa Auto division

With this implementation into every part of life, it is creating a major shift towards voice marketing. Imagine you are sitting at home and you are interested in buying a new blender because your previous one broke. You shout out “Hey Alexa, what’s the best best blender I can buy?” Alexa then spits out the top brands in her search engine. ComScore estimates that, by 2020, 50% of all searches will be voice-based. This is a wide open opportunity for companies to start optimizing their marketing towards that customer channel. There is also the advertising piece where voice ads add for a highly contextual placement, i.e., Ordering Pizza for a late night gathering or even ordering flowers for an anniversary present.

Since it is fairly new, it will be fairly inexpensive to tap int this channel. You will have access to millions of smart speaker users and that method of marketing will not be perceived as aggressive. As this technology continues to evolve, there will be many more opportunities for marketing strategies to be implemented, but for now, its an open ecosystem for experimentation! Try out some tactics and include it in your marketing campaigns to see what works and what doesn’t!
