Looking Glass revealed its latest holographic display – the Looking Glass 8K Immersive Display.

For those unfamiliar, Looking Glass isn’t traditional AR or VR but provides a method of viewing 3D content without the need for head-worn gear.

The newest display is measured at 32 inches and provides multiple perspectives for 3D content which can be viewed by multiple people in the room without any additional headsets or head tracking. Looking Glass displays typically generate “45 distinct and simultaneous perspectives of three-dimensional content” with the new 8K version said to offer “33.2 million pixels…with over a billion-count color gamut at 60 Hz.”

The 8K Immersive Display is available for pre-order globally and is slated to start shipping in Spring 2020. We don’t yet have the price on the system with Looking Glass encouraging enterprise customers to contact future@lookingglassfactory.com for pricing details. Looking Glass developer kits were already available earlier this year, albeit in a much smaller size than the new 8K display.

The first public demonstrations of the new display will be held from November 13-15 at the Digital Content Expo in Japan. Demonstration units will also be available by appointment in Brooklyn, Hong Kong, San Francisco, and Tokyo.

We’ve seen videos of developers using Looking Glass displays in really interesting ways — taking advantage of the 3D effect it produces combined with additional body-tracking hardware — and would expect to see similar uses once this hardware ships. There are more details for the Looking Glass 8K Immersive Display on the company’s website and we’ll bring you updates as soon as we are able to set eyes on the new system.
